Wynnewood North – Post-War Vision with Enduring Appeal

Situated just north of the Wynnewood Village Shopping Center in Oak Cliff, Wynnewood North was envisioned as a forward-thinking suburban development in the wake of World War II. With wide streets, mature oak trees, and large, shaded lots, the neighborhood remains a striking example of mid-century planning—offering the charm of a traditional community with the convenience of urban access.

A Master-Planned Mid-Century Neighborhood

Development of Wynnewood North began in the late 1940s, when Angus G. Wynne, Jr. acquired the American Home Realty Company and its holdings—more than 820 acres of former farmland. Of that, roughly 120 acres became Wynnewood North, designed to offer residents a comfortable, self-contained community with high-quality homes, easy access to downtown, and a nearby retail hub.

Unlike many neighborhoods of the time, Wynnewood North was developed with intention and foresight. The Hare & Hare landscape architecture firm, known for their work across the U.S., helped shape the neighborhood’s natural appeal, while architect Bud Oglesby contributed to its architectural landscape. The result was a rare combination of suburban calm and city proximity.

Strong Design and Enduring Layout

Homes in Wynnewood North were built with an eye toward livability and design integrity. The lots were larger than average for the era, offering homeowners privacy, mature trees, and a spacious streetscape. The neighborhood was—and still is—characterized by cohesive architecture, thoughtfully planned layouts, and mid-century homes that have aged gracefully alongside their canopy of oaks.

With boundaries at West Clarendon Drive to the north, West Illinois Avenue to the south, Vernon Avenue on the west, and Zang Boulevard to the east, the neighborhood offers easy access to I-35, Downtown Dallas, and the growing number of businesses and amenities in North Oak Cliff.

Recognition and Community Spirit

In 2012, Wynnewood North was named “Best Neighborhood in Dallas” by the Dallas Observer, a recognition that reflected both its historical significance and its active, engaged community. Residents today continue to celebrate and preserve the post-war spirit that defines this pocket of Oak Cliff.

Originally part of a larger farm owned by John M. Wright until 1913, the land has transformed into a walkable, tree-lined neighborhood that honors its mid-century origins while meeting the lifestyle needs of modern Dallas homeowners.
