The Dell – A Quiet Enclave with Timeless Cottage Charm

Nestled just southwest of the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Westmoreland Road, The Dell is a hidden pocket of Oak Cliff filled with early 20th-century charm. With tree-lined streets and a mix of historic architecture, this small neighborhood offers an inviting atmosphere that feels removed from the bustle of nearby roads.

Early Beginnings and Tudor Character

Originally platted in the late 1920s as the Irwindell Addition, the neighborhood began its development under the guidance of a local builder who envisioned a collection of character-rich homes. Between 1929 and the early 1930s, a number of Tudor-style cottages were built—complete with steep gabled roofs, brick archways, and covered porches. These homes reflected the storybook architecture popular during that era and established the neighborhood’s enduring aesthetic.

Changing Streetscapes and Post-War Growth

At one time, stone archways marked the entrances to the neighborhood at key intersections—a defining feature that gave The Dell a distinct sense of place. Unfortunately, these arches and several adjacent homes were lost during the widening of Westmoreland Road, which altered the original footprint of the neighborhood.

Following a pause during the Great Depression and World War II, residential construction resumed in the late 1940s and early 1950s, with the addition of modest ranch-style homes. These post-war residences, finished in pale brick, limestone, or a blend of both, were designed to complement the original Tudors in scale and footprint, maintaining the cohesive charm of the neighborhood. The inclusion of the Richland Hills Addition later completed what is now recognized as The Dell District.

Natural Surroundings and Lasting Appeal

Despite its location near a major intersection, The Dell feels quietly tucked away thanks to its wooded setting and proximity to the riverbed of Coombs’ Creek. The same creek runs through several other Oak Cliff neighborhoods, including the scenic Stevens Park Golf Course area, providing a natural thread through this part of Dallas.
