Elmwood – Historic Charm and Greenbelt Living in Oak Cliff

Tucked into the gently rolling hills of North Oak Cliff, Elmwood is a tree-lined neighborhood known for its eclectic homes, expansive greenbelt, and welcoming community—just 15 minutes from downtown Dallas.

Originally the site of the Tennessee Dairy Farm in the early 1900s, the land was transformed into a residential development by Frank G. Jester in 1924. Over the following three decades, a variety of homes were built, including Tudor cottages, Craftsman bungalows, 1930s wood and brick cottages, and ranch-style homes from the 1940s and ’50s. Many still feature native stone, hardwood floors, and vintage architectural details that give the neighborhood its timeless character.

Elmwood’s natural heart is the Elmwood Parkway, a lush greenbelt that follows Cedar Creek and Rugged Branch. This stretch of mature trees and native vegetation offers a peaceful escape and includes a mile-long walking trail, a crossing to Kiest Park, and the beloved Elmwoof, the only dog park in Southern Dallas. It’s common to see neighbors jogging, walking dogs, or enjoying a morning stroll under the canopy of oaks.

Within Elmwood sits Elmwood Park, a gathering space for families and dog walkers, complete with open green space, playgrounds, and wildlife. Together with the parkway, this gives the neighborhood a uniquely tranquil feel within an urban setting.

Along Edgefield Avenue, Elmwood’s small commercial district includes vintage storefronts, professional offices, historic churches, and a Masonic Hall. The area even gained cinematic fame in 1988 when scenes from Born on the Fourth of July were filmed here.

Civic pride runs deep in Elmwood. Residents have actively preserved the area's natural features and character, revitalized local parks, and stood up for environmental protections. In recent years, the former Dixico factory site was transformed into Tyler Station, a mixed-use space housing small businesses and the neighborhood’s first post-Prohibition brewery.

Elmwood today includes around 1,375 homes and a population of approximately 4,500. Its blend of historic architecture, parkland, small-town charm, and city access makes it one of the most desirable communities in Oak Cliff.
